Survey-based method for valuing non-market goods consisted in the creation of simple hypothetical markets where the individual chooses between one or a few scenarios and the business as usual scenario. It is a stated-preference method as the individual is directly asked about their preferences.
In this field, in a typical contingent valuation exercise: from the demand side perspective, individuals are asked for their willingness to pay for a defined scenario of improvement in the level of provision of public goods by agricultural and forestry systems; and from the supply side perspective, farmers/foresters are typically asked for their willingness to accept participating in defined scheme which entails such improvement (and a monetary compensation for it). Below can be found assessments (especially from the demand side) made within the PROVIDE Project using this valuation method.
